Statement from DC37 Executive Director Henry Garrido on New York State and Senate One-House Budget

3/19/2021

Earlier in the week, the Assembly and Senate of New York State agreed on a series of one-house budget resolutions.  By uniting their budget priorities, the Assembly and Senate  enters budget negotiations with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo with bargaining power they have not had in recent years.  Among other issues, the one-house budget advocates for raising taxes on high-earners, and increased educational funding and COVID-19 relief.

DC37 supports the one-house budget, and DC37 Executive Director Henry Garrido issued the following statement:

STATEMENT FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR HENRY GARRIDO ON NEW YORK STATE SENATE AND ASSEMBLY ONE-HOUSE BUDGETS

“At a time that stands alone in New York’s history, we need leadership that puts people first. Now is not a time to cut jobs and put families out on the street. Now is not a time to cut funding for health care and risk public hospitals New Yorkers rely on. Now is not a time cut funding for public schools just as our children are going back into the classroom.

“The one-house budgets released restore funding that the Governor’s proposed Executive Budget senselessly cut and includes billions in new tax revenue proposals that our State desperately needs. They also include an Early Retirement Incentive – something that not only shows our essential workers the respect they deserve – but would also save thousands of jobs and create a pathway to civil service careers while unemployment in New York is at a rate not seen in recent history. I thank Senate Leader Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Heastie for putting hardworking New Yorkers first.”

The state budget for the next fiscal year will be decided upon by April 1.

Local 1482 Responds to Anti-Asian Hate and Violence

3/17/2021

The Brooklyn Library Guild, Local 1482, raises our voices with our Asian-American union members and communities who are facing escalating racially-motivated attacks in our neighborhoods and throughout the country. Violence against city workers and those we proudly serve in this diverse city is against everything we stand for as union workers.

Although anti-Asian violence is not new, it has increased recently, and it must stop.

United with AFSCME and Local,1321, Queens Library Guild, we join together to speak up for the rights of the Asian community to safely live, work, and learn in our city, in our state, in our country, and around the world. An injury to one is an injury to all!

In solidarity, a phrase we use frequently, but never lightly.
