What is an RSS feed?

  • RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary.  It is a format that delivers new web content directly to you as soon as it is updated.

  • RSS saves you time because you do not have to remember to visit your websites individually to find out what is going on.  You can also customize the content that you receive by subscribing to blogs and websites, or by setting up 'news alerts' for topics of interest to you.  Everything you subscribe to gets sent to one place, your RSS aggregator (also known as a Reader).

  • RSS readers are either web-based or you can download them as software.  Very often, you can sync your feeds between your computer and your mobile device.  There are numerous options to choose from.  Here is a very comprehensive and lengthy list from Wikipedia.  For a smaller selection of options, check out this article (It is an article with alternatives to Google Reader.  Google announced recently they are shutting it down on July 1, 2013).

  • To subscribe to RSS updates from local1482.org,
    1. Set up an account with a reader if you don't already have one.
    2. Go to the Local 1482 Home Page.
    3. Click on the RSS icon on the top right corner of the screen.  Done!
